Boulton extends stay with Coventry Rugby

Phil Boulton has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract to extend his stay at Coventry Rugby until at least the end of the 2021/22 season.

The 33-year-old prop has been a mainstay of the Coventry Rugby front row throughout his three-and-a-half years at Butts Park Arena, playing 87 times in the first team.

The club captain is proving his ongoing durability this season, too, and is the only member of the Senior Squad to have seen action in all 13 of the matches in the Greene King IPA Championship and Championship Cup played so far in 2019/20.

He says that it was an easy decision to sign a new deal.

“I’ve really enjoyed representing Coventry and the club’s great supporters throughout my time here,” he commented. “Obvious highlights include promotion into the Championship, but since then we’ve come on in leaps and bounds and Butts Park is an exciting place to be.

“We’re an ambitious club and want to be playing in the Premiership at some point and are improving all the time on and off the pitch. So I had no hesitation in signing my new deal and am looking forward to helping the club develop over the next few years.”

Boulton is now also combining his playing commitments with developing the next generation of Cov players as Head Coach of the club’s Under-18s, and Director of Rugby Rowland Winter says that he makes a big contribution throughout the season.

“Boults is an excellent person to have at the club, on and off the pitch,” he said. “When we signed him from Bedford we knew that we were bringing in a quality individual, and so it has proved.

“He is a strong leader and continues to be an excellent club captain, backing this up with his drive to push the club forward and how well he is playing in games. And as our Under-18s’ Head Coach he is now passing on these standards, expectations and expertise to our next generation, which will see more young players from the area represent the club in the future.”

Phil Boulton is sponsored by Robinson Manufacturing Ltd.
