Coventry Rugby is proud to celebrate a landmark achievement as Senior Academy wing Taio Varndell has been called up to represent England U19 in their upcoming fixture against Japan U19 on Saturday 21 March at Oxford University Rugby Club.

The selection marks a historic moment for Coventry Rugby and its academy pathway, underlining the rapid progress and success of the programme since its launch in 2024. Varndell’s inclusion in the national squad is a testament to both his individual talent and the club’s commitment to developing elite young players.

Since its inception, Coventry Rugby’s academy has focused on identifying and nurturing local talent, providing a clear pathway from grassroots to the professional game. Varndell’s rise through the ranks exemplifies this vision in action, showcasing the effectiveness of the club’s investment in youth development.

Academy Manager Matt Jones expressed his pride in Varndell’s achievement:

“This is a significant milestone in Taio’s journey and an important moment for him as an aspirational young player. His selection for England U19 presents a valuable opportunity to step into a higher-level environment and test his current skillset against stronger opposition.

He will follow Will Dorrell in becoming the club’s second player to be invited into national pathway activity, which is a fantastic marker for both him and the wider environment.

We are pleased to see him access this level of exposure and are proud to be a vehicle for aspirational, Midlands-based players to experience the demands of the next level and move towards these opportunities.”

Varndell will now have the opportunity to test himself on the international stage against a strong Japan U19 side, gaining invaluable experience as he continues his development.

Everyone at Coventry Rugby wishes Taio the very best for the match and looks forward to following his continued progress in both club and international colours.
