Coventry Rugby is excited to announce that Rhys Anstey will be joining us on a season-long loan from the 2022/23 RFU Championship runners-up, Ealing Trailfinders. Anstey, who’s preferred position is second row, will join the Coventry squad in time for the 2023/24 campaign.

The 6ft6 lock gained valuable experience in the Welsh Indigo Premiership whilst also making appearances for his national team, Wales, at various age groups. Coventry Head Coach, Alex Rae can’t wait to get his hands on the young second row:

“It’s great to be able to welcome Rhys in on loan, he’s a young man with plenty of potential. It’s now our job to help him develop areas of his game and make sure he really enjoys his rugby here at Coventry. Also, thanks to Ealing for placing their trust in us with helping Rhys develop.”

The 21-year-old was a member of Gwernyfed RFC before plying his trade in the Cardiff academy. Anstey made his first appearance for the Cardiff squad in the 2021/22 season in a pre-season friendly against Harlequins. Over the next two seasons with the team, Anstey made over 30 appearances which included his competitive debut in the Heineken Champions Cup against Toulouse in the 2021/22 season.

Following his time in the Welsh capital, Rhys moved to the English Championship side, Ealing Trailfinders in February 2023. During his spell with the side, Anstey went on loan to Richmond and made his debut for the side on 25th March 2023 against Jersey Reds. Anstey played four games for Richmond with one of those being a memorable performance against his new team, Coventry Rugby.

Welcome to Coventry, Rhys.
