DIRECTOR of rugby Rowland Winter applauded an impressive double for Coventry over Blackheath while adding that there is a lot more to come from the senior side.
Cov extended their winning start in National League One to four games with a bonus-point 37-10 victory over their previously unbeaten visitors, while the Development side opened their Zoo Sports Shield account with an excellent 52-19 win over Blackheath Heathens.
“I’m pleased with the result and I think the performance was a big improvement from last week, but I think there’s a lot more to come from us,” said Winter after the first-team game.
“We were a little bit flat in the first half, we didn’t really get into our stride until 20 or 30 minutes into the game, and the try we conceded was disappointing when we made a bit of a mess-up in our back play.
“But once we settled we came through and worked really hard for our points.
“Our defence was good, they camped on our line two or three times and we worked something out and got our hands back on the ball, and we put a lot of pressure on their set piece which eventually started to tell.
“There was more intensity all round, and our back row absolutely dominated them – it was a real top performance from them and the changes we can make there make it a very effective unit.
“It’s a convincing win but, as I said, there’s a bit more work to do to streamline – we left a lot more out there which we need to tidy up on nd there is room for improvement.
“This group is only going to get better week by week and settle more and more.”
Added Winter: “The Development team’s performance was excellent. There was a lot of young talent on show, and they moved the ball around well and scored lots of well-worked tries which was really pleasing to see.”
