Coventry Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Matt Gallagher on Sunday, 8 March.
Matt was a valued member of the Coventry Rugby family whose connection with the club spanned far beyond his time on the field. While many supporters will remember him as a talented full-back who made 100 appearances for the club after joining in 1996, those who knew him best will remember him for his character, kindness and the way he brought people together.
After beginning his senior career with Nottingham, Matt arrived at Coventry having already made a strong impression in the Championship and through his performances for Warwickshire in the County Championship. At Coventry he went on to become a centurion for the club, contributing during a competitive era that included a playoff run and memorable victories against some of the top sides in English rugby.
Following his playing career, which also included a return to his first club Birmingham Solihull, Matt remained closely connected to the game and to Coventry Rugby. He played an important role in helping to run the club’s Former Players Association, maintaining strong bonds between past players and the club while continuing to support the rugby community he cared so deeply about.
In recent years, Matt became an inspiration to countless people through his tireless work supporting those affected by motor neurone disease. As the driving force behind the Matt Gallagher Foundation, he dedicated himself to raising awareness, bringing communities together and helping families facing the challenges of MND.
Despite facing his own battle with extraordinary courage, Matt devoted his energy to supporting others. Through the Foundation’s work, more than 100 families have received help and support, while over £1.6 million has been raised to improve the lives of those living with the disease. His compassion, determination and unwavering positivity created a network of hope for so many people during the most difficult of times.
Above all, Matt was a devoted husband, a loving father and an inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him. His strength, humility and generosity of spirit will never be forgotten.
Everyone at Coventry Rugby sends their heartfelt condolences to Matt’s family, friends and all those connected with the Matt Gallagher Foundation at this incredibly difficult time. He will be greatly missed across the rugby community.
Coventry Rugby will pay its respects to Matt Gallagher with a minute’s silence at tomorrow’s fixture against the Army Rugby Union.
