Coventry Rugby are delighted to announce the signing of exciting back-rower Chester Owen ahead of the imminent start to the 2023/24 campaign.
Aiming to build on last season’s third-place finish in the Championship – the club’s highest position in the professional era – Alex Rae has made plenty of additions to his young squad over the summer.
Owen is the latest name to be added to the Coventry roster before pre-season fixtures get underway this coming Saturday when Leicester Lions visit the Butts Park Arena (3pm kick off).
Owen began his rugby journey aged only three, playing for his local side Ashby RFC. The now back row initially plied his trade as a centre before his raw power and dynamism caught the watchful eye of Leicester Tigers who brought the teenager into their academy system.
Chester’s transition from centre to back row was a smooth and successful one which culminated in the award of a first professional contract with the Premiership outfit.
While honing his skills in a top-level environment, Owen also gained invaluable senior league experience while on loan at Leicester Lions during an outstanding 2022/23 campaign which delivered the National Two West title and a first-ever promotion into English rugby’s third tier.
Owen is now making another step up as he joins a Coventry side looking to build on its successful 2022/23 campaign. He believes the move to the BPA will give him the right environment for the next stage of his professional development.
“I’m excited to be a part of this hard-working and determined group,” he said. I enjoy the way they play here, and how hard the players and coaches push one another both on and off the field. I’m looking forward to the future.”
Head Coach Alex Rae is excited by what Owen brings to his squad and the back-rower’s scope for further development.
“It’s great to welcome Chester on board,” he said. “He’s a young man with loads of potential who has worked really hard in pre-season to earn this opportunity. We’re looking forward to helping him continue to develop and enjoy his rugby.”
