Without a win at home since the end of October, Coventry badly needed a positive performance & victory. How well the squad responded to give their followers a very welcome Christmas present to avenge the defeat suffered at Park Lane in September.

In every sense after the success at Doncaster, it was important there was a follow up to this at home. Sedgley Park to their credit gave a tremendous amount to a match that was always well contested, with Coventry having to work hard in both halves to achieve their ultimate success.

‘’ Patience is a virtue’’, was a point particularly  echoed by new coach Brett Davey post match when looking at the first half efforts. Playing into a deceptively strong breeze and rain certainly required a measured approach and Cov can surely have felt happy enough with a 7 all score line at half time. Park on balance had shaded the first half, but that soon changed after the turn round, a second Coventry try not only setting the crowd alight, but it also ensured the balance of the game remained the blue & whites way.

Once again a no frills & all round team performance ensured the second win in consecutive weeks, but it was Sedgley Park who drew first blood. Within three minutes after fly half Jones had opened up the home defence, a series of pick &  drives finally saw the hard working number eight Skurr burrow over, Jones converting. Cov were forced to replace flanker Jamie Miller who departed with a hand injury, Hendry Rheeders coming on & then the visitors might have extended their lead further only for Kurt Johnson to put in a try saving tackle on Van Deventer.

On 16 minutes though Coventry were level. From a penalty kick into the visiting ‘’22’’, the forwards set up a series of pick up & drives leading to Dai Maddocks crashing over, Ben Russell converting.
Four minutes later, a lengthy stoppage saw Nathan Jones receive attention for what looked potentially to be a serious injury, the scrum half recovering however to play a full part.

Both sides had further opportunities before the break, Jones missing a penalty attempt for the visitors, Logon Kirisome in injury bursting clear only to be brought back for an offside offence

With rain still falling Cov could not have made better start to the second ‘’40’’. Within a minute following a line out on half way, the forwards rolled for number eight Laurie Mc Glone to launch himself on a terrific 45 metre dash. A superb try which set the home crowd alight & with Ben Russell converting from wide out all of a sudden it had become 14-7.

Jack Cobden all but added to the lead had he been able to hold on a bouncing ball following a teasing up and under from Brett Davey, but Cov were not to be denied. Two tries within nine minutes of each other effectively wrapped up the match & also a bonus point.

First Brett Davey after a little chip followed up to gain his first try for the club & how his colleagues & the crowd loved it as they cheered the coach to the hilt and then on 61 minutes, Logon Kirisome finished off some excellent build up with try number four. Ben Russell continuing his excellent kicking form converted both.

Sedgley Park, although now 21 points adrift tried manfully to break down the home defence, but every effort was thwarted even though the visitors retained possession for lengthy periods at a time.

Another fine all round team effort from Cov had brought victory number six & a move up the table to 9th.
