COVENTRY Rugby Football Club has added highly-rated former Wales under-21 prop, David Maddocks, to its squad for next season. The 24-year-old loose head joins from Welsh regional side Newport Gwent Dragons where he spent two seasons and comes to the Butts Park Arena with considerable experience of Celtic League and European rugby.
Noted for his ball handling skills, strong scrummager Maddocks represented Wales at youth under-19 and under-21 levels, playing for Llanelli prior to his move to the Dragons. He had attracted considerable interest before opting to link up with head coach Murray Henderson at the club. Murray first spotted the loose head prop in a Barbarians’ game against the Army at the Twickenham Stoop earlier in the season. "I had an assessment session with Murray and thoroughly enjoyed it," said Maddocks who, at just over 6’. 1” and 18 stone, represents a powerful addition to the squad. "I'm looking forward to learning a lot at Coventry and helping the club move forward. I’ve been very impressed by the professionalism of everyone at the club, their structures and training facilities are first-class." Commented Coventry chairman, Andrew Green: “We are very happy to have signed a player of such calibre and pedigree. "David is a young professional who is highly regarded and is just the type of player Coventry needs to attract in order to progress. "He joins many of our squad who have signed with the Club for two years, a development which underlines the commitment of everyone at Coventry RFC to build a team that will deliver long-term success on and off the park."
