In wet and windy conditions in Cornwall, Coventry slipped to a 16-15 defeat the by Cornish Pirates, despite a brave performance, and having led for almost the entire match. Coventry managed a 0-10 lead at half time, but sustained pressure bythe Pirates got them back into the game, eventually clinching the game in the dying minutes. Coventry had taken the lead with an early Kurt Johnson try, converted by Russell, followed by another three points coming from a 20 metre penalty conversion just before the half hour. A 13-man driving maul by the Pirates following a penalty kicked into the corner failed to score just before half time. In the second half Pirates scored from an early penalty for 3-10, then another penalty took it to 6-10, before another Johnson try just before the hour made it 6-15. Pirates then came back with a coonverted try for 13-15, followed by a late penalty for 15-16. |
