Not even a good drenching could dampen the spirits of the Coventry supporters who saw their side win the last of their warm up matches ahead of the 2006/7 league campaign.

In testing conditions the Blue and Whites started brightly combining well at first in defence, to keep the visitors at bay and secondly in attack linking nicely between the forwards and the three quarters.

The Northampton Wanderers brought with them a selection of their rising stars plus a number of old faces, more than familiar to the home crowd. Giant prop Soane Tonga’uiha has joined the East Midlands based club having signed from Bedford in the off season and Wanderers’ captain Ben Lewitt was himself a Coventry colt before moving to Leicester Tigers.

Coventry try scorers were Ben Russell with a fine individual run, finished of with a final shove for the line and the ubiquitous Tom Johnson who grows in stature by the game. Ben Russell successfully kicked four penalty goals following Wanderers’ indiscretions and also slotted a conversion. The visitors scored two tries themselves but Coventry who can take pride form their performance were the deserved victors.

All eyes now turn to National Division 1 league action with Coventry travelling to Sedgley Park on the opening weekend of the season. Please do come along and support the Coventry RFC team, the supporters coach is to leave the Butts Park Arena at 10.30am. Places can be booked by either speaking to the Tibbitts’s or by calling the club on 08717509100.
