IT’S OFFICIAL – the first fixture between Coventry Rugby and Wasps in over two decades is on!

When – Saturday, August 25

Where – Butts Park Arena

Time – 2pm kick-off

COVENTRY Rugby can confirm that their final pre-season game before the start of their 2018-19 Greene King IPA Championship campaign will be against city neighbours Wasps.

The last time the two clubs met was at second-team level in the 1995-96 season when Coventry Extras recorded a 55-0 win over Wasps Vandals at Sudbury.

Regular first-team fixtures, which began on November 1, 1958 with a 20-5 win for Cov at Sudbury, ended after the meeting on March 2, 1991 at Coundon Road when Wasps were 20-15 winners.

Wasps are expected to field a mixture of Senior Academy, under-18s and senior squad players for the fixture which will be the first in Coventry’s season ticket package – full details of this to be announced shortly.

“It’s a game our fans have been talking about, and we will be delighted to host Wasps and their supporters,” said director of rugby, Rowland Winter. “It promises to be a great day for both sets of fans, renewing a former rivalry, and we are sure our visitors will enjoy coming to a traditional rugby ground.

“It will be an excellent way to end our on-pitch preparations for the new challenge we will face in the Championship.”
